Cities of Refuge

Click here to read Joshua 20.

Chapter 20 deals with the establishment of "cities of refuge" for anyone who kills any person unwittingly. There they may seek permission from the cities elders for refuge from those who seek revenge. They were to remain there until their trial or until the death of the High Priest at the time of the killing. Then they could go back to their own home. Six cities were designated:

  1. Kedesh, in Naphtali.
  2. Shechem, in Ephraim.
  3. Hebrom, in Judah.
  4. Bezer, in Reuben.
  5. Ramoth, in Gad.
  6. Golan, in Manasseh.

This is the last time we will find this mentioned, accept in the inheritance of Levi.
