Chapter 21 tells of the inheritance of the Tribe of Levi. Many times it was said that Levi would have no inheritance in the Promise Land, but here we see that they inherited 48 cities for their maintenance, residence and pasturelands for their cattle. This was commanded of the Lord, through Moses. For the families of Kohath, 13 cities were designated from the tribes of Judah, Simeon and Benjamin and 10 cities from the tribes of Ephraim, Dan and Manasseh.
For the families of Gershon, 13 cities were designated from the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali and Manasseh.
For the families of Merari, 12 cities were designated from the tribes of Reuben, Gad and Zebulun.
The cities were catalogued and assigned to the different families of the Tribe of Levi.
