Chapter 22 deals with the 2 and one-half tribes that had chosen to settle east of the Jordan River, Reuben, Gad and part of the Tribe of Manasseh. These tribes had furnished most of the soldiers for the destruction of Jericho and had continued with their brothers in the conquest of Canaan. Here Joshua dismisses them and allows them to return to their respective tribes. When they come to the Jordan, they build an altar of great size and when the other tribes hear of this they assemble at Shiloh to make war against them.
Phinehas, the son of Eleazar the Priest, and one chief from each of the tribes that had settled west of the Jordan in Canaan, went to the tribes who had built the altar and condemned for what they had done. The 2 and one-half tribes explained why they had built the altar. It was to be a witness of the unity of the twelve tribes, the 2 and one-half tribes on the east side of the Jordan and the 9 and one-half tribes on the west side of the Jordan, that at no time should those on the west say to those on the east, "You have no portion in the Lord". This pleased all of the tribes and they went home in peace.
