Deborah's Song

Click here to read Judges 5.

Chapter 5 records the song that was written about the events in Chapter 4 and sung by Deborah and Barak. I was probably customarily in those days to publish a song upon such an occasion to record the event. Many such poems were probably penned during the time of the Judges, but only this one by the Prophetess Deborah was recorded here for posterity.

The song begins with Phrase to God, comparing God's appearance here on their behalf to that of Mount Sinai. The greatness of this event was magnified by the terrible condition that the people were in. Deborah called all of Israel to share in the benefits of this great victory, proclaiming honor upon the tribes that took part in this war and disgrace upon those who did not. She makes sure that all know to whom the glory belongs, giving God the credit for the victory. She particularly honors Jael who slew Sisera and concludes with a prayer to God.
