These last chapters relate to events that occurred after the death of Joshua, in the days when Phinehas was Chief Priest. (Phinehas was the third Chief Priest after Aaron and Eleazar) Verse 6 in chapter 17 sums it up this way, "In those days, there was no king in Israel and every man did what was right in his own eyes."
Chapter 17 describes the idolatry that began in the family of Micah. Micah lived in the "hill country" of Ephraim. Micah took 200 pieces of silver and made a "graven image, and he made one of his sons a priest. A young Levite on a journey from Bethlehem in Judah stopped at the home of Micah. Micah installed the Levite as priest and he became like a son to him. He reasoned that the Lord would bless him in spite of his idolatry, because he had a Levite as priest.
