Chapter 18 shows how it spread to the tribe of Dan. At this time, the tribe of Dan had not received their inheritance. They sent out five men to "spy out" the land and report back their findings. They went into the hill country of Ephraim and came upon the house of Micah. They recognized the Priest as a Levite and inquire of him as to the success of their journey. He assured them that their journey was under the eye of the Lord and they left in peace.

They departed and went to Laish. They observed the wealth and ease of living of the inhabitants and went back and reported their findings to their brethren. They assemble 600 men of war to conquer the people of Laish. On their way, they stop at the home of Micah. There they take the "graven image" and the Levite and continue on to Laish where they burn the city with fire. They rebuild the city and call it Dan. They set up their graven images and make Jonathan, son of Gershom and grandson of Moses, their Priest. His sons were Priests to the Tribe of Dan until the day of the captivity of the land.
