Things that Defile

Click here to read Leviticus 18.

Chapter 18 lists 5 things that would defile a person:

  1. Not keeping the Lord's statutes and ordinances. Included in this command was the elimination of those customs that they had acquired in Egypt and the warning not to acquire any from the Canaanites.
  2. Observing a naked person. Included were father, mother, sister, grandson, granddaughter, nearest kin, kinswomen, aunt, daughter-in-law etc.
  3. Sexual behavior.
    1. No sex during a woman's period.
    2. No sex with your neighbor's wife.
    3. No giving of your daughter as a sacrifice to the sun god Moloch. (Pagans believed this would bring good luck to the rest of the family)
    4. No homosexual acts.
    5. No sex with animals.

It does not seem that you would have to tell people not to do these things, but these were things that were being practiced in Canaan when the people of Israel got there and that is why God wanted them all destroyed along with their idols and places of worship. Anyone who commits any of these abominations shall be cut off from his people.
