This chapter deals with two ordinances that the people and the Priests were not only ignoring but were actually profaning them. This denouncement is Malachi's Second Oracle to the people of Israel. The first ordinance, the ordinance of the ministry, was being profaned by those who were charged with the keeping of it. The Priests profaned the Holy Things of God and here Malachi strongly warns them of the judgment for such disrespect for the ordinances of the ministry. The second ordinance that was being profaned was the ordinance of marriage. Condemned here is the custom of the Jewish men who divorced their Jewish wives and married Gentile women. Also condemned was the treating of their wives unkindly both in the "putting" of them away and in the harsh treatment of them. Included also in the oracle was the practice of false dealings with one another. All of this was the result of their attitude toward God. Many would say, "There is no God". It resulted in a corrupt society.
