We have here in this last chapter of Malachi, instructions that are very proper for the closing out of the Old Testament. The theme is the one that has been prominent all through the Old Testament, misery for the wicked and happiness for the righteous. Here the wicked is symbolized by the city of Jerusalem and the Jews that refused to accept the Messiah. The righteous is symbolized by those who accept the Messiah and the salvation that he offers.
Malachi closes with encouragement to keep an eye for further enlightenment and Revelation as one comes to prepare the way of the Messiah. This chapter defines the final judgment, Heaven for the believer, Hell for the non-believer. A warning is given about the "false prophets" that will come in the last days, all claiming to be the "sons of God". Remember Christ said we all, the wheat and the tares, will grow in the same field.
The last three verses in Chapter 4 is an appendix that was added later. It is a solemn conclusion that they were not to expect the enlightenment spoken of in the above paragraph until the coming of the one who would prepare the way of the Messiah and the enlightenment of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
