Listen to the Lord's complaint, for He had a case against the people of Israel. How can you make up for all that He has done for you? If you offered Him thousands of rams for sacrifice or ten thousand rivers of olive oil, would that please Him? Would He be pleased if you offered up your oldest child as a sacrifice? Would that make Him glad? Then would He forgive your sins? No, of course not. All He wants is for you to be fair and just and merciful and to walk humbly with Him, but you have sinned miserably against Him, therefore, He will make your hearts miserable. You will eat but you will still be hungry. You will plant crops but you will not harvest. You will trample grapes but you will get no juice. He will make an awesome example of you; you will be the laughing stock of the world.
