God's Wrath and Mercy

Click here to read Nahum 1.

Chapter 1 is a Psalm which has traces of an "alphabetic acrostic" meaning that the verses begin with the letters of the alphabet beginning with a and going to s. It is a terrifying manifestation of the wrath of God, who was outraged at the evil done by Assyria to His people. It is also a gracious manifestation of the mercy of God towards His people, the people of Israel. Through both of these manifestations the majesty and power of God was revealed.

Some Scholars believe that this is a parallel to the defeat of Assyrian Army when they besieged Jerusalem, which was a very illustrious display of God's power that encouraged the faithful and brought terror to His enemies.
