Chapter 2 records the answer to Nehemiah's prayers. For 4 months he prayed, from November to March, finally an opportunity came. The King called for his cup and contrary to court rules, Nehemiah appeared before the King with a sad face. The penalty for this was your life but the kindly King inquired instead into the cause of his sadness. Nehemiah explained his grief over the city of his fathers and the King asked how he might be of service to him. Nehemiah asked for a commission to go as the Governor of Judah to rebuild the city. The King granted his request but noted that he expected Nehemiah to return which he promised he would. The King not only granted him his request but he also provided a guard to escort him to Judah.
Nehemiah arrived in Jerusalem un-noticed at night. He viewed the ruins of the city. He went out the Valley Gate, passed the Dung Gate and returned thru the Fountain Gate, un-noticed. He then made it known to the Elders of the city the he was there and disclosed his plan to rebuild the walls of the city. They concurred and Nehemiah said to the people, "Come let us repair the walls of Jerusalem, they are a disgrace to our fathers."
