Rededication

Click here to read Nehemiah 9.

Chapter 9 gives an account of a "fast" that the people kept to show their humility. A month later, in October, the people returned to Jerusalem for a time of confession of sins and re-dedication. It was a time when Hebrews separated themselves from foreigners. There was a platform with 8 Levite leaders upon it. These were probably Ministers or Rabbis of 8 different congregations. They were on the platform phrasing God and singing songs of Joy.

Then Ezra prayed. Notice the points of his prayer:

  1. He phrased God as the Creator.
  2. As the one who delivered them out of Egypt.
  3. As the Giver of the Law on Mt. Sinai.
  4. As their Sustainer during the 40 years of wandering.
  5. He acknowledged the peoples disobedience, and phrased God for His forgiveness.
  6. He praised God for His help in conquering great kingdoms and many nations.
  7. He praised God for being long suffering, eventually bringing judgment upon them with bondage in Babylon.
  8. He praised God for His compassion in allowing them to return to their native land.
  9. Because of His compassion, they promised to serve Him and enter in to a covenant with Him and have the Levites sign it.
