Rededication
Chapter 9 gives an account of a "fast" that the people kept to show their
humility. A month later, in October, the people returned to Jerusalem for a
time of confession of sins and re-dedication. It was a time when Hebrews
separated themselves from foreigners. There was a platform with 8 Levite
leaders upon it. These were probably Ministers or Rabbis of 8 different
congregations. They were on the platform phrasing God and singing songs of Joy.
Then Ezra prayed. Notice the points of his prayer:
- He phrased God as the Creator.
- As the one who delivered them out of Egypt.
- As the Giver of the Law on Mt. Sinai.
- As their Sustainer during the 40 years of wandering.
- He acknowledged the peoples disobedience, and phrased God for His
forgiveness.
- He praised God for His help in conquering great kingdoms and many
nations.
- He praised God for being long suffering, eventually bringing
judgment upon them with bondage in Babylon.
- He praised God for His compassion in allowing them to return to
their native land.
- Because of His compassion, they promised to serve Him and enter in
to a covenant with Him and have the Levites sign it.
