Chapter 2 deals with the assigned location of each tribe when they camped and when they marched. (See Illustrations) Each tribe had its own standard (flag), and each family in that tribe had its own family crest. The flags were mounted on staffs and placed outside the tent of the head of each family.
Question, why did God make these assignments and why did he position them as he did? Matthew Henry, in his commentary, believes that God appointed them in order to prevent envy and strife amongst the tribes. Moses would never have been able to satisfy them all and left to themselves, it would not have been resolved. ( Note: The explanation given for their grouping is on the Illustration showing their marching order.)
