Chapter 3 deals with the assignments of the Tribe of Levi to the service of the Tabernacle. The family of Aaron was assigned the office of Priest. Others of the Tribe of Levi were assigned as follows: 3,200 of the family of Merari, the youngest son of Levi, was assigned the task of transporting the "less sacred" parts of the Tabernacle, 2,750 of the family of Kohath, another son of Levi, was assigned the task of transporting the "sacred" parts of the Tabernacle, 2,650 of the family of Bershon, the eldest son of Levi, was set aside to maintain the Tabernacle.
