Ordination of the Levites

Click here to read Numbers 8.

Chapter 8 deals with the Lamps of the Tabernacle, also the ordination of the Levites, a second-class clergy, and their duties to aid Aaron and his sons. For their ordination, the Levites were required to go through the purification rites. They were required to wash and then shave themselves from head to toe to remove any thing unclean that could not be washed away. These Levites, called the "inferior clergy", were to assist the priests and from that time on, were not to have anything to do with the other tribes. When duly ordained, they were assigned to Aaron. They were brought in as apprentice at age 25 and served in that capacity for 5 years. At age 30 they were ordained and served for 20 years. From 50 on, they tutored the apprentices, guarded the Tabernacle and did any chore that was not "fatiguing".
