Chapter 19 deals with the "purification rites" needed by everyone to come near the Tabernacle, accept the Levites. The following were those rites:
Anyone who had become "ceremonially unclean" should offer, to the Lord, a red heifer, without blemish, one year old, one that had never been yoked. The Chief Priest, Eleazar, would take the animal outside the camp and watch it being killed. He would then take some of the blood and sprinkle it 7 times toward the front of the Tabernacle. The rest he would burn. Both Eleazar and the one who burns the animal, must wash their cloths and themselves and remain outside the camp until morning.
Some who might require these purification rites were those who had been in a tent or had entered a tent where someone was dead. They would be unclean for 7 days and must be purified. Also anyone who has touched a body killed in battle or in any other way, would be unclean for 7 days and must be purified. Anyone who becomes unclean for any reason and does not become purified, will be excommunicated.
