Chapter 27 deals with the question of what happens to a man's inheritance if he dies and has no sons. Zelofehad, great, great, great, grandson of Joseph, had only daughters. These daughters came before Moses and Eleazar, the High Priest, to claim their father's inheritance. Moses took the case before the Lord and the Lord told Moses, "If a man dies and has no son, you shall cause his inheritance to pass to his daughters." "If he has no daughters, his inheritance shall go to his brothers." "If he has no brothers, it shall go to his father's brothers." "If his father has no brothers, that it shall go to the next of kin, that the inheritance might stay in the family."
Then the Lord told Moses to go up onto Mt. Abarim and view the Promise Land. He also told him that it was time for him to be "called " home as his brother Aaron had been. Moses asked that someone be ordained to take his place. God chose Joshua, son of Nun. Moses was instructed to lay his hand on Joshua as a sign of his ordination as he stood before the High Priest and the Congregation. Moses did as the Lord had instructed him.
