Chapter 32 deals with the distribution of the land. The Israelites, by now, had occupied most of the land east of the Jordan River. They had pitched their tents on the Plains of Moab, north of the Dead Sea and east of the Jordan River. We have here a request from the tribes of Reuben and Gad that Moses give them, for their inheritance, the land east of the Jordan.
Moses misunderstands their request. He thinks that they are trying to get out of fighting for the land west of the Jordan. After both tribes assures Moses that they will fight along side their brethren until each tribe receives the land that the Lord had promised them, Moses granted their request. To the tribe of Gad he granted the land east of the Jordan River from the Dead Sea to the Sea of Galilee. To the tribe of Reuben he granted the land east of the Dead Sea as far south as Moab. Then he gave to the " tribe of Manasseh the land east of the Sea of Galilee from the north boundary of the tribe of Gad to as far north as they could possess.
