Canaan Defined

Click here to read Numbers 34.

Chapter 34 deals with the boundaries of the Promise Land (Canaan) and the distribution of the land among the remaining tribes of Israel. The size of Canaan was very small, about the size of England or about 160 miles long and 50 miles wide.

The bounds were roughly defined as follows: The south was bounded by the River of Egypt which ran from the south tip of the Dead Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. South of this was the Wilderness of Zin. The west boundary was the Mediterranean Sea. The north boundary ran east and west from the Mediterranean Sea to a point about 30 miles north of the Sea of Galilee. The eastern boundary ran parallel and about 30 miles east of the Jordan River. God then named one man from each of the 9" remaining tribes and their responsibility was the dividing of this land. This division of land is recorded for us in Chapters 13 through 17 in the book of Joshua.
