Psalm 3 Author David. Victory in the face of defeat. It shows us the peace and Holy Security of the redeemed. (Perseverance of the Saints) It was written at a time when David had been driven out of the Holy City by his rebellious son, Absalom. Notice at the end of verses 2, 4 and 8, the word "Selah" occurs instructing the Chief Musician to observe a pause there and since no instruments were ordered by the author, the pause would be a silent one.
It would seem strange that David would write of the security of the believer during a time of distress but he had places himself under the protection of the Lord and believed that in spite of his son's actions, he was safe. He complains a little but he assures the Lord that he is still faithful in spite of this problem, acknowledges pass answers to his prayers and the goodness that God had brought his way. He reminds himself of the times that God had calmed his fears and gave him victory over his enemies and gives God all the glory for this and rests in the assurance of his redemption.
