A Plea of Innocence

Click here to read Psalms 7.

Psalm 7 A shiggaion* of David. (* Meaning unknown, used only here and in Habakkuk Ch. 3:1) David appears to have been unjustly condemned by his enemy, Cush the Benjaminite, so here he declares his innocence before God and seeks God's favor in afflicting his enemies. He pleads, like Job, for God to be his judge and redeemer. He instructs the Chief Musician to use the song "Shiggaion", what ever it was, to accompany this Psalm.

There are two possibilities as to the identity of the person who unjustly accused David. It could have been a Cushite or Ethiopian, a descendant of Ham, one of Noah's sons, or it could have been a kinsman of King Saul, named Cush who, for whatever reason, considered himself an enemy of David. We are not told what the accusations were, but David declares his innocence before God and asks God to be his defender and judge those who wrongly accused him. He promised to give God the glory.
