Psalm 22 Author David. Psalm of the cross. Written to the chief musician, with the tune "Hind of the Dawn" specified by David. The "Hind" was a female deer. Here the "Spirit of Christ" is testified to more clearly than anywhere else in the Old Testament. It speaks with accuracy of Christ's suffering and the glory that followed i.e. resurrection, ascension and His place at the right hand of God. Thus it contains the 4th, 5th. and 6th. prophecy concerning the Christ. The amazing thing about this Psalm is the accuracy of the events prophesied considering it was written 1,000 years before Christ.
David must have had great satisfaction in writing this Psalm. He is privileged to write of things that were far beyond his personal knowledge to the extent that men would look at him as though he was a "figure" of the One that was to come, the Messiah. Here he is wonderfully carried into the "Spirit of Prophecy" far beyond his own understanding. It must have given him much satisfaction to have been honored so and to realize that he was to be in the linage of the Messiah.
Five times David complains in this Psalm and five times he comforts himself with the knowledge that God was with him and that He would save and keep him. He felt that his life, especially his persecution, would bring hope and salvation to his people just as the persecution and death of Christ brought life and salvation to His people, those who believe.
