Expressions of the Soul

Click here to read Psalms 27.

Psalm 27 Author David. Trust in the Lord and be not afraid. Scholars differ as to when David wrote this Psalm some say it was the product of his youth and others, of his old age. Matthew Henry believes that this Psalm is the expression of an "old and devout soul" that had, on many occasions, been carried by the Lord. David testifies to the many times that the Lord has carried him up out of his afflictions. He urges others to seek that strength and place their hope in God. Most Jewish scholars believe that this Psalm was written on the occasion when David, late in life, was saved from the sword of a giant, by Abishai, (Second Samuel 21:16). From that point on, the people would not let David go into battle again.

Regardless when this Psalm was written, it is a pious and devout expression of a gracious soul that has been helped many times when he was in need. Here David expresses his "bravery" in his faith, the consistency of his belief and the benefit he had gotten from it. He also expresses his desire to be with God and the value that this has been in his life. He declares what he expects from God and encourages others to "hope" in Him also. All this he hopes will be accomplished as we read this Psalm.
