Psalm 40 Author David. Delight to do God's will. Written to the chief musician. David wrote this Psalm as the result of God having "lifted" his spirit out of self-condemnation which was the result of some grievous sin in his life. He thanks God for the favor shown toward him. He prophesies Christ's delight in doing the will of God and lifting the spirits of men.
In the lifting of David's spirit it appears that he also was endowed with a spirit of prophecy. He testifies for the sufferings of Christ and the glory that would follow. How much of the phrases that preceded this prophecy or the prayers that followed related to David is not clear but surly the prophecy was of the promised Messiah. We do not know how much David understood of what he spoke but we do know that it encouraged him to pray for God's mercy for himself and for his friends.
In the reading of this Psalm we must be thankful for God's gift of prophecy to David and for the blessing of having seem it come to pass.
