Psalm 41 Author David. The blessedness of helping the poor. Written to the chief musician. The poor in this Psalm are those who are sick and persecuted. David found peace for his soul in God's healing of his sick body and His help in overcoming his barbarous enemies. Like Christ, one that betrayed him was a friend. The Psalm concludes with a doxology: "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting. Amen, Amen."
Apparently David was sick or had just gotten over an illness when he wrote this Psalm. We sometimes forget that people in those days got sick just as they do today and had far less resources to heal them. David depended upon God to heal him as He had in the past. He related illness to persecution as many did and prayed that God would heal and destroy his enemies at the same time which would bring about complete satisfaction on his part. He believed that God could and would do this. Thus this Psalm is a Psalm of faith to be used in times of persecution whether from illness or from our enemies.
