Common Sense Versus Faith

Click here to read Psalms 42.

Seven of the next 8 Psalms are believed to have been written by the "Sons of Korah". Korah was a Levite that lived at the time of Moses and was appointed a "Gate Keeper" at the Tabernacle in Ex. 6:24. His descendants formed a Guild of Temple Musicians who were credited with writing at least 10 Psalms.

Psalm 42 Author The Sons of Korah. Seek after the Lord. Written to the chief musician. It is a "liturgy", perhaps chanted instead of sung. A Psalm of conflict between "common sense" and "faith". Sometimes common sense says it is not so, but faith says it is. Only then, by faith, can we seek after the Lord. THUS... Psalm 42 is a debate between "Common Sense" and "Faith". It describes the struggle that Christians go through from time to time. Faith tells us one thing but common sense will often try to tell us something else. Notice the argument:

  1. Faith establishes Holy desires and communion with God as the Christians goal for his life. BUT, common sense urged on by Satan, will question this and remind you of the, so called, "former pleasures" which were once your goal in life.
  2. Faith will silence this thought and remind you of the "hope" and "reassurance" you now have by Faith. BUT, common sense will cause doubt in your mind and seek to get you to question the "hope" that is in you.
  3. Faith assures you that righteousness will ultimately conquer your doubts, BUT common sense says that that's "pie in the sky" and we need to be realistic.
  4. Faith gets the last word in this Psalm; by assuring the believer that "goodness" will overcome "evil".

Surly the author of this Psalm must have, like most people, experienced times of doubt.
