All Things Work for the Best

Click here to read Psalms 46.

Psalm 46 Written by The Sons of Korah or for The Sons of Korah. God is our refuge and strength. The instructions are not clear. The term "Ala-moth" is used which may suggest that young women hummed in the background as it was sung since the word means "maidens". Some believe that the word referred to a certain musical instrument. The Psalm encourages us to take comfort in God when things around us are threatening. It is said that Martin Luther always asked the congregation to sing this Psalm whenever anything threatened the peace and tranquility of his church.

Notice the "pauses" (Selahs) in this Psalm. There is one after verse 3, 7 and 11. These occur after the three places in which the author declares the "comfort" and "protection" of God.

  1. Verse 3, (paraphrasing), "Though the mountains tremble, God is our strength, therefore, we shall not fear."
  2. Verse 7, "Though nations rage and kingdoms totter, God is our refuge."
  3. Verse 11, "Be still and know that He is God, the source of our refuge."

These are three places that we are instructed to stop and meditate on:

  1. The catastrophes in nature.
  2. The downfall of nations.
  3. The evidence of God's mighty works.

Take comfort, He is on our side.
