Psalm 51 Author David. The confession and forgiveness of sin. David wrote this after Nathan, the prophet, accused him of being with Bathsheba. The Psalm expresses the cares and desires of a repenting sinner. He confesses and then asks of pardon, for peace of conscience, for grace to go on and sin no more and for access to God that he might seek God's grace over and over again. This is an excellent Psalm of anybody with a guilty conscience (did I leave anybody out?).
Matthew Henry believes that too much of our time before the "Throne of Grace" is spent is confession of sin and the asking for forgiveness. How much better it would be if we could spend that time in phrase for that truly is the work of the believer. However, being people of a carnal nature, we must do as David in this Psalm, confess our sins and seek God's forgiveness in order to experience the "joy of our salvation" and to commune with God and know that He hears. The process is well spelled out in this Psalm and should be a part of our religious worship. We may not be guilty of the sins of David, adultery and murder, but we still find ourselves in need of forgiveness.
