A Psalm of Sorrow and Grief

Click here to read Psalms 52.

Psalm 52 Author David. The Lord shall judge the deceitful. This was written to the chief musician and was to be chanted and not sung. It was written because of the events of I Samuel 22 when Saul had all the Priests killed because they had given refuge and support to David, and David felt that he was responsible for their deaths. With great grief and sorrow, he penned this Psalm.

The actual killing of the Priests was done by Doeg, the Edomite, Saul's chief herdsman. Here David condemns him of lying and murder, he accuses and convicts him for the grievous crime and passes judgment upon him. In the face of this crime against the innocent, David foretells of the ultimate victory of the righteous. He comforts himself with God's grace and forgiveness and assurance of God of the preservation of His church.

In the reading of this Psalm we must see the consequences of sin and the ruin of those who persist in it. Then we should take comfort in the promised preservation of Christ's Church in spite of all the powers of Hell against it.
