Psalm 53 Author David. A portrait of the godless. It is very similar to Psalm 14. It was written to the chief musician with instructions, "Maha-lath-lean-noth, these are not clear but seemed to indicate it was to be "chanted" in a sad mood. We are repeatedly warned in this Psalm to realize and admit to our sins or suffer the judgment of God.
When God speaks we should try to listen but when He speaks twice about the same thing, we should surly listen. This Psalm and the 14th. Psalm are written to convince us of the seriousness of sin. The accusing word is here related to a hammer that must make repeated blows to accomplish its task. The Psalmist shows us how truly bad we are, proves it by our own conscience and sends terror into the hearts of sinners.
Some difference is here found from Psalm 14, here the shame of God is put upon the wicked, in Psalm 14, the shame of the wicked was put upon the people of God. In the reading of this Psalm we should lament the carnal nature of man and the world that we live in and rejoice in the hope of deliverance from it.
