Fear Because of Betrayal

Psalm 54 Author David. The Lord is our helper. Written to the chief musician with instructions that it was to be "chanted" and accompanied by a stringed instrument. It was written when David was in extreme terror because the inhabitants of Ziph betrayed him and told Saul where he was hiding. Here David thanks the Lord for what he believes the Lord will do in delivering him from the hands of Saul.

Ziph was a town south of Jerusalem in the inheritance of Judah. They were a type of "Judas" the traitor. They betrayed David twice by telling Saul where he could find David and how he could take him captive (I Sam. 23:19 and I Sam. 26:1). It appears to have been written in faith counting on God's deliverance even before it happened.

In the Psalm he complains to God of the devious nature of his traitors and the malice of Saul. He prays for God's deliverance from the hands of Saul and comforts himself with the assurance that God would do just that. We can surly use this Psalm when we are in similar times of distress.
