Psalm 61 Author David. A prayer for when you are overwhelmed. Written to the Chief Musician with instructions that it was to be accompanied by stringed instruments (Neginah). David declares that there isn't a place where he would not cry out unto the Lord, no matter how overwhelmed and that he always was supported and relieved by the Lord. Notice the "mood change" of David in this Psalm. He begins with a prayer of tears and ends with a song of phrase. It is believed that he wrote this Psalm on the occasion of his banishment from Israel either by Saul or by his son, Absalom.
It would appear that the "King" refered to here is Christ, the Messiah, not David. He does, however, call upon the Lord for protection and he does this because God had always provided in the past thus he phrases God for His faithfulness. In the reading of this Psalm we should find hope and assurance and respond in phrases to God.
