Psalm 71 Author David. A prayer for the aged that may well have been written by David in his old age. It's a prayer that God will not cast him off in his old age when he is not as useful as he once was. He receives great confidence, in the Psalm, and ends with grateful thanksgiving.
This Psalm was surly written at a time in David's life when he was going through some very serious trouble that was caused by old age or that needed action that he was not able to provide because of his age. Many believe that it was the time of Absalom's rebellion and others believe it was occasioned by Sheba's insurrection. The particulars of his problem have been left out so that we can use it and fine comfort in it from our own problems.
He begins with a prayer for God's help in the solving of this problem and for deliverance from those whom he believes is the source of the problem. He asks for confidence in his old age, that God will not forsake him but continue to aid and deliver him. He ends the Psalm with what appears to be an answer to his prayer, one that left no doubt in his mind of God's deliverance. This answer leaves him in great joy, great confidence and much thanksgiving.
Undoubtedly David's purpose in writing this Psalm was to encourage us to follow his path and, by faith, find the same joy and confidence that he did.
