Psalm 72 Author David. "The Reign of the Messiah Foretold." This Psalm may have been written by David for Solomon. It is a prayer for guidance and protection for Solomon and ends the Second Book of Psalms with this doxology: "Blessed be His glorious name forever." "May His Glory fill the whole earth." "Amen and Amen."
Apparently both this and the previous Psalm was written when David was very old. Here David knows that Solomon's reign will shortly begin. Psalm 71 was a prayer for himself; the Psalm is a prayer for the new King, Solomon. This Psalm and his words in I Kings 1:30, do, by divine direction, establish and proclaim Solomon as the successor to David as King of the United Kingdom of Israel.
David begins with a prayer for Salomon, and then he goes into a long prediction of the glory of the reign of Solomon. Then he concludes with phrase to God for what he prophesies to be the greatest age of Israel. Surly all that is prophesied can be said of the Kingdom of Christ and many believe that this indeed is a prophesy of that Kingdom which is the way we should apply it when we read it.
