Psalm 74 Author A-saph. A request for God to remember His covenant. It is called a "Maschil", a sermon. It appears to describe in detail, an event that occurred some 400 years after it was written. A-saph lived about 1000 BC. It appears to describe the destruction of the Temple which occurred in 600 BC. Some believe that it was written after the destruction of the Temple by the "Sons of A-saph", the chief "family of singers" that retained this name clear up till the time of Ezra and Jeremiah which was after the destruction of Jerusalem.
The Psalmist pleads with God to remember His covenant with His people. With the destruction of the city and the Temple and the people carried away into captivity by the Babylonians, it looked like God had forgotten His promises to them. Here the Psalmist pleads for God's deliverance.
