Psalm 76 Author A-saph. The Glorious Might of God. It was to be accompanied by stringed instruments. This Psalm may also have been written later by the "Sons of A-saph", perhaps during the reign of Hezekiah, about 700 BC as it describes the glorious deliverance of Jerusalem from the Assyrian Army by an Angel from Heaven. This would explain why some old translations title this Psalm, "A Song Upon the Assyrians". It may also, describe any of the many times God delivered Israel during the reign of David. It is a Psalm of thanksgiving, declaring the Glory of God, why we should fear and trust Him and expounding the glory of His might.
In this Psalm the Psalmist congratulates the Church for having a God that was so accessible. He finds the event that occasioned this Psalm to be an example of this blessing. He also reminds us that a God so close by gives reason why we should fear Him and obey Him. It is a wonderful Psalm for Thanksgiving but can be used anytime, as it is always proper to give thanks to God for his mercies.
