An Appeal to God for Revenge

Click here to read Psalms 79.

Psalm 79 Author A-saph. Avenge the Defilement of Jerusalem. It was set to the same tune as the Lamentations of Jeremiah.

It was written about the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple, either as a prophecy, as most think, to prepare the people for what was about to come, or, as a record written after the fact about 600 B.C.

It contains the following:

  1. A representation of the deplorable and sinful condition of that day.
  2. An appeal to God to pardon those sins.
  3. An appeal to the people to repent of those sins.
  4. An appeal to God to avenge the destruction of Jerusalem.

It would appear the this Psalm could be use either during a time of prosperity when things are going well or during times of persecution when the Church is in need of encouragement to remind us that we are His and in spite of trouble, He will deliver us as He has in the past.
