Psalm 80 Author A-saph. Israel's Plea for God's Mercy. It contains two instructions to the head musician:
Many believe that it was written on the occasion of the destruction of the Northern Kingdom of Israel and the scattering of the 10 tribes. It begs for God's presence to be with them to give them mercy and to prepare them for it.
Surly this Psalm was applicable to many occasions in the life of Israel. Most of the Prophets of Israel lived and prophesied of such destruction and they all asked God to grant them strength to bear up under it. It begs for God's presence in time of trial, it complains of their present troubles, it compares the present destruction of the church to a vine that once bore fruit but now was dead. It ends with a prayer for mercy.
