Psalm 85 Written for the Sons of Korah. Prayer for Revival. No specific instructions to the chief musician. It is believed that it was written after the return from captivity in Babylon while they were still under some tokens of God's displeasure with them. There was still disbelief and disorder in Judah. Judah, at that time, was compared to Noah near the end of the flood. The "dove" was Noah's hope in God's promise of a new world. Here revival was Judah's hope for a new world. Just as the "olive branch" brought back by the dove to Noah assured him that God had keep His promise, here revival was symbolic of God's promise of forgiveness and spiritual renewal.
Here the dove sent forth is prayer. Requests are made for God to strengthen them against sin and to return His mercy and Grace. The Psalmist closes with an expression of assurance in God's offer of the "olive branch" in return for the revival of His people. In the reading of this Psalm, we must do so in an attitude of prayer for God's forgiveness and the return of His grace both to His Church and to this nation.
