Psalm 87 Written by or for the Sons of Korah. Glorious Zion, City of God. No specific instructions are given to the chief musician. Here Jerusalem seems to be preferred over the rest of Judah because of the Temple, in receiving the tokens of God's favor. Examples were the flourishing of the city during the time of David and Solomon and the rebuilding after the Babylonian captivity.
Not only does the Psalmist see Jerusalem blessed with earthly things but with heavenly things also. Even the Leaders of the city are seen as "favored" of God. It is hard to determine the time of this Psalm and the mind set of the Author. He is either looking at the past glory that was Jerusalem or he was looking forward to its rebuilding, modernized in even greater splendor.
Many believe it is both and applies to God's church. They see the splendor of the Temple of the past compared to the glory of the future Kingdom of Christ. "This is Zion whom no man seeketh after." Jeremiah 30:17) The Kingdom of Christ whom the Jews rejected.
