The Judgment of God

Click here to read Psalms 88.

Psalm 88 Author Heman. Crying from Deepest Affliction. It was written for the sons of Korah to sing and the instructions were "Mahalath" and "Leannoth". These were obscure instructions used only here and in the 53 Psalm and probably meant that it was to be sung in a "sad mode". Heman was a "Ezrahite", a member of a priestly family, a wise man of Solomon's time (1st. Kings 4) It is a melancholy psalm which does not conclude with any comfort or joy. The Psalmist, under the conviction of the Holy Spirit, wrote concerning the judgment of God that they were under due to their sins.

This is the saddest of all Psalms. It appears to have been written as a personal expression of fear and sadness, sadness over some grievous sin that had come into the Authors life and fear of what Judgment God was going to put upon him. We can in the reading of this Psalm, see the great conviction that the Author was under, the wickedness of his friends who obviously had sinned also but were not under conviction and his pleadings with God for forgiveness and the privilege of returning back into His presence.
