Israel's Rebellions

Click here to read Psalms 106.

Palm 106 Author unknown. No specific instructions to the chief musician. "We Have Sinned." The confession is in two parts:

  1. We first confess God's goodness.
  2. Then we confess our badness.

The last Psalm was a history of God's goodness toward Israel. This Psalm is a history of Israel's rebellions against God, from their lack of faith at the Red Sea, the golden calf, their murmurings, their quarreling with Moses to their joining themselves to the pagan nations of Canaan. He reminds them of God's judgments for those sins. He ends with a reminder of God's salvation from this kind of ruin.

The purpose of this Psalm is to magnify God's goodness and mercy. The Psalmist does this by reminding us of the many times that Israel rebelled against God yet He still remained their God. His mercy out did their unfaithfulness. This only magnified His Grace. Because of this, the Psalm begins and ends with a form of "Hallelujah". Some believe it was penned during the time of the bondage in Babylon, others believe, because of the similarity, that it was penned by David at the same time as the previous Psalm.

He ends the 4th. Book of Psalms with this doxology, "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting. Let all the people say Amen, phrase the Lord." In the reading of this Psalm we should relate it to our rebellions against God and remind ourselves of his faithfulness in forgiving us.
