Psalm 110 Author David. No instructions. Here David prophesies:
Melchizedek was a priest-king who lived during the time of Abraham near where the city of Jerusalem now stands. At that time it was called Salem. He took in Abraham when he was weary from battle and fed him with ceremonial bread and wine and then gave him rest. He became a symbol of priest-king through whom would come salvation.
We see in this Psalm an understanding of the position of the promised Messiah that early Jews had that the Jews at the time of Christ did not have. In Matthew 22:41-45, Christ asks the Pharisees to explain what David meant in the first verse of this Psalm, "The Lord said to my Lord........." Jesus asked the Pharisees, "Whose son is the Christ?" They answered, "He is the son of David." Then Jesus asked, "How is it that David called him Lord if He was his son?" And they were not able to answer Him.
Certainly David is speaking of the Messiah as Redeemer, Prophet, Priest and King with reference two His persecution and his exaltation. He prophesies the Christ will reign until He has put down all evil and then He will present the Church to God the Father.
