Better to Trust God Than Man

Psalm 118 Author unknown. No instructions for the singing of this Psalm. May have been written by David. The Psalm contains two prophecies concerning the Messiah. It appears from the Psalm that David had secured his Kingdom, his enemies were defeated and he was established as God's anointed King.

  1. David is now the cornerstone of the kingdom of Israel as Christ will be the cornerstone of the Kingdom of God. (Matt. 21:42)
  2. David, as God's anointed, reigned in the name of the Lord, as Christ, God's anointed, came in the name of the Lord. (Matt. 21:9)

In this Psalm David not only acknowledges God's efforts on his behalf but also urges his friends to do likewise, to cheerfully acknowledge God's goodness and the reliance upon it for the future looking forward to the coming of the Messiah. Christ applied this Psalm to Himself in Matt. 21:42. In the reading of this Psalm we too must give thanks not in the promise of the Messiah but in the fulfillment of that promise with the coming of Christ.
