False Accusers

Click here to read Psalms 120.

Psalms 120 thru 134 are called "songs of degrees". David is credited with writing this one and the 122nd., the 124th. and the 131st., Solomon the 127th., and the rest the authors are unknown. These psalms are all songs of "ascents" or degrees. It is believed that they were used by the Priests as they ascended the 15 steps from the Outer Court to the Inner Court of the Temple. They are all very short Psalms. They frequently end a verse with a word or words that becomes the first word or words in the next verse as in Psalm 121, "I will lift up my eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help." "My help cometh from the Lord..."

This Psalm deals with false accusers. It is believed to have been penned by David on the occasion of being falsely accused by Doeg, Saul's man in charge of herds, (I Sam. 21:7) because it is like Psalm 52 which was pinned on that occasion. In both Psalms he complains of being driven out of the congregation and forced to go out among pagan people. He prays for God's deliverance from these false accusers and complains about his wicked neighbors.

In the reading of this Psalm we find comfort in the times that we may have experienced false accusations and like David, learned from them.
