Psalm 122 written by David declares Jerusalem as the city where God's name would be proclaimed. It was written for the use of the people of Israel when they came up to Jerusalem to worship during the three feasts of the year. It was during David's reign that Jerusalem was chosen as the place where God's presence was found. It was one of the means used to turn the people's love and affection from the "high places" to Jerusalem, as the Holy City. It being a Psalm of Degrees it spells out the joy that they should experience as they go up to Jerusalem, the concern that they should have for the city and the prayers they should offer for the city.
In the reading of this Psalm we should relate Jerusalem to the "New Jerusalem" and the anticipated joys of entering that city.
