Psalm 123, another of the Psalm of Degrees, was written at a low point in the religious life of the people. Many believe it was written during the exile in Babylon but it could have applied to the many times their disobedience brought judgment upon them from the Lord. The Psalmist speaks as though he is speaking of himself only then changes to include the whole congregation. It is a plea by the congregation for mercy and deliverance from their persecution.
In the reading of this Psalm we must look two ways, one to God's mercy and two, to our deserved judgment.
