David's Profession of Humility

Psalm 131 is another Psalm of Degrees. It was written by David and proclaims his humility. It was done with thankfulness toward God for his Grace and not in vainglory. Most believe that it was written in response to those in Saul's command who accused David of being an ambitious man who, under pretense of being divinely appointed, sought the Kingdom of Israel that rightly belonged to Saul out of the pride of his heart.

In this Psalm, David appeals to God, who knew his heart, that this was not true and that indeed he sought nothing high or great. He was like a child who had been weaned from his mother and accepted whatever condition Providence placed him in. Here encourages all people to do as he did and trust in the Lord. Many have suggested over the years that most people have difficulty in the reading of David's Psalms because they could not truthfully say, as David did, "My heart is not haughty". But perhaps in the reading of this Psalm we might admonish ourselves as to what we ought to be and with repentance, humbly ask God for Grace to be so.
