Psalm 137 Author unknown. This is an "imprecatory" Psalm (the act of invoking evil). It is a sad song written in the last days of the 70-year exile into Babylon which is also believed to be the last days of the Jewish Church. In it the people cannot find any comfort or joy, they do not respect their oppressors and they cannot forgive them.
This is a mournful Psalm and the Hebrew Bible makes it one of the Lamentations of Jeremiah. In this Psalm the people are so depressed that they cannot find joy in any part of their lives. They have, by now, lost all respect for their captors and even after 70 years and several generations, they still yearn for Jerusalem.
In the reading of this Psalm we are warned not to mix the "leaven of malice" with our devotions. The application today is still toward those who have become the "Anti-christ. We must remember that God will, in due time, deliver His church from these imposters and thus we must be careful to avoid personal animosities.
